Obituary

Lee was born in Klang, Malaysia as the youngest of four children. He finished his schooling in Malaysia before venturing over to Australia in 1982 to pursue his tertiary studies in engineering. It was at university that he met his future wife, Dzung, whilst he was president of the university badminton team. They went on to have two daughters - Alexandra and Angelina, who have both grown into accomplished young women, one a doctor and the other an engineer and lawyer.

Lee celebrated the fun side of life - he loved watching Marvel movies, anime, going out to concerts and live theatre and filming Tiktoks with his daughter. He was also a prominent figure in the badminton community, as a player, coach and umpire.

His infectious smile and character will be surely missed by many.

I only ever met you once, but it was clear to me that you were an incredible dad to your daughters who always made every effort to show up, and bring smiles to everyone's faces. You looked so proud and I giggled at how silly you were willing to be in order to get the photos that Angie wanted. I loved watching your TikToks and your reactions to all the things I also love: Twice, Kpop Demon Hunterels, Wicked, and all the finer things in life. May you rest in peace and happiness. Loved your work before, now, and always. The world is just a bit dimmer without you around.

My deepest condolences to the Lau family, our hearts all hurt with you.

Our deepest condolence to Lee's family. We got to know Lee through the badminton journey with Ai-Yah team. He is such a great gentleman, kind and caring with great sense of humor. Apart from coaching us on badminton skills, he also shares his passion for food. He always brings delicious Malaysia desserts and other yummy food to share with us over Vet tournament weekends away! We had so much fun and good laugh.
Lee, we will always miss you.

To the Lau Family,
Your father truly had one of the biggest hearts. He was one of the kindest people I’ve met, a talented badminton player, and a larger-than-life presence in the community. His passing leaves a deep void for all of us.
I first met him before Covid on a Saturday night at Hay St, Box Hill, where we played badminton until midnight. He kept teasing me, saying, “I’m old enough to be your father!” From then on, we shared many games—sometimes as teammates, sometimes as opponents—filled with laughter, friendly banter, and even those 50-cent bets he loved.
I often saw him coaching the next generation. He was firm, but the kids adored him. His passion for badminton and helping others enjoy the sport was unmatched.
I regret not joining his veterans team, though he tried many times to convince me. Still, I cherish the memories—especially him umpiring my match at the 2024 Corpora

Uncle Lee was an amazing coach and a great inspiration to all badminton players at Infinity. His kind nature and amazing coaching skills inspired us to become the players we are today. I remember how he would bring hair ties and clips for players in case they forgot and his kind but strict demeanor to his students. He will forever live in our hearts and our deepest condolences to all close to him.

I will always remember Lee for his personality. In all my memories he is always smiling and so kind to everyone. I miss the matches played and thankful for coaching my daughter in he past few years. It is too early to take an eternal rest and I was shocked by the news. Wish you rest in peace and let's have more matches when I see you again. I will miss you lots before that.

I was shocked to hear the news. Lee Lau was still on my Graded 1 emergency fill in at DVBA.
He was a kind gentleman and I dreaded facing him in a competition. He was just too strong and also too skilful.
We will definitely miss him.

Dear Lee,

I still can’t believe you’re gone. I keep thinking about when I texted you while I was in Hong Kong in late November. You told me you would save Tuesday mornings for me—for our badminton training. And when I didn’t see you at the court on December 2nd…I kept waiting, hoping you would walk in. You didn’t keep your promise to come, and my heart still aches from that empty space.

I miss training with you so much. I miss asking you, “Was it better?” and seeing you smile and say, “No comment.” Those small moments meant more than I ever realized.

You will be deeply, dearly missed. I’ll hold on to everything you’ve taught me and do my best to carry it with me into every game.

I used to do badminton group training with Lee and he was one of the key members of our team for several team tournaments in the last few years. He was kind, helped the team on badminton drills, game strategy, and provided us recommendations on food & restaurants from time to time. It was fun to have him in the team and training sessions. All these memories are priceless.

Forever a part of our team and badminton family, always in our hearts.
