Obituary

Timothy Michael Maher was born on 9 August 1983 at Canberra Hospital, a cherished son to Leonie and Garry, and a beloved brother to Kristie, Teri, and Joel. He grew up surrounded by a close and loving family connections that shaped the man he became.

Tim began school in Canberra before moving at eight to Camden Haven, attending St Joseph’s Laurieton and later Port High, finishing in 2001. Though bright and capable, school never quite matched his spirit. He was most at home outdoors drawn to the ocean, sport, and working with his hands.

He threw himself into football, swimming, surfing, running, and drag racing, playing rugby league with the Camden Haven Eagles and joining Nippers. But surfing was where he felt most free out on the water, at peace.

Growing up in Dunbogan, Tim was rarely far from the beach or a bit of mischief. Afternoons meant school bags dropped at the door and straight out the gate with his brother and mates. The quickest way to the ocean involved jumping a fence, dodging Mr Atkins, fire ants, and bitou bush hazards that never quite discouraged him. If a few dollars turned up along the way, Tim would make sure there were hot chips to share after a long day of adventure. He was fearless, cheeky, and endlessly generous.

As a teenager, his compassion showed early. He once brought home a bag of kittens he’d rescued, hiding them in the laundry. The family kept one and found homes for the rest. Throughout his life, he cared for many animals, though dogs held a special place they were his pack.

After school, Tim explored surfboard shaping and carpentry before starting a motor mechanic apprenticeship with his father in 2002, specialising in high-performance vehicles. He had a remarkable gift for understanding complex systems and explaining them simply.

Later, Tim worked across Australia, including time in Mt Isa and FIFO roles in civil and rigging work. He shared many adventures with mates, travelled to Indonesia, and enjoyed a special family holiday to Fiji.

In 2008, Tim met Jess. Together they built a life in Port Macquarie and welcomed three beautiful children Archy, Frankie, and Audrey who meant everything to him. Though he and Jess separated in 2020, Tim later found love again with his partner Kath.

In later years, Tim held onto the things he loved motorsports, the ocean, time with family, and photography. He had a curious mind, always asking questions and seeking to understand the world.

Tim was thoughtful, kind, and quietly gentle. Above all, he was a devoted father. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him
