The first memory I have of Uncle Denis is from the early 70s I think. We went in a mini bus from Bolton to Southampton to pick up Grandma and Grandad from the QE II. Kathryn was only about 6, and Uncle Den let her have a sip of his beer. We had to stop the coach while she was sick.
Kath and myself, along with your Aunty Anthea, were bridesmaids for your Mum and Dad. I remember Grandma couldn't make the wedding as she was ill in bed. We went straight from the wedding to visit her, so she wouldn't miss out.
Uncle Den always wrote regularly to Mum, and sent photos of you all growing up.
I remember one time that your Dad was visiting from Australia, and I was in class detention, so I missed him.
He was a supply teacher at St Cuthberts in Bolton. Mary (Paddys sister) was taught by him. She thought he was gorgeous.

This is a letter my dad received from Abdul Wahidi, an Afghan refugee he had written to in detention. So sad, the plight that refugees faced in surviving persecution in their own country, undertaking arduous and perilous journeys and then having to endure years of uncertainty upon arriving in Australia. So proud that dad reached out to asylum seekers and helped keep this young man going.
