Obituary

Sheree Kinlyside’s story began on 17 July 1955, when she was born in Young, New South Wales, to Elizabeth and Alan Kinlyside.

Sheree lived and travelled widely before eventually settling in Townsville, where she raised her two children, Robby and Jorgia, alongside their father, Merv McAllister.

Sheree made a significant contribution to the local community, particularly through the arts. A deeply passionate artist, she explored many mediums over the years, learning, sharing and teaching. Her later years were devoted particularly to traditional printmaking, a practice she pursued with great dedication and through which she built friendships and connections both locally and internationally.

Sheree married Alan Carpenter on 8 July 2006. Together they spent twenty years nurturing their family, creating a loving and warm home, and sharing their appreciation and love of art.

Sheree and I met over the internet and corresponded regularly about our shared family history for several years - we had the same great grandparents - and it was a great delight to welcome her to England, not once, but twice, as we continued to explore our ever-increasing family tree. On her first visit, along with Nancy, we visited a number of places associated with family members and met with several cousins we had tracked down. Her second visit, along with Alan and Jorgia, was more of a social occasion, although there were occasional family history and printing ink elements. I shall miss Sheree but am so pleased to have known her.

Sending lots of love from Canberra. We loved every visit we had with Sheree. She was always a breath of fresh air with her honesty, energy and artistic approach to life. We are planning a drive to young to photograph all the beautiful front gates along the way, just as Sheree had said she wanted to do one day. Xx

Sheree was a powerhouse of a woman, artist, and friend. It seemed there was nothing at which she did not excel. The breadth of her artistic practice regularly humbled me. She made everything seem so easy! Her invitation to me to join the FBar crew each Friday night was the beginning of a great friendship, one which never brought judgement or pressure to be a certain 'anything'. Just yourself. We enjoyed those nights, thanks largely to Sheree's efforts to keep us on track. Even when she asked us to write down our wishes/goals for the next new year (she checked off how well we'd gone at the end of the year, don't worry!) it was a mixture of fun and real gratitude for the friendships we forged. I will always be grateful for Sheree welcoming me into her life and circle of friendship. There is a method artists use which is commonly referred to as “viewing at a distance.” Quite simply, taking a few steps back from your work and squinting your eyes. I have clear childhood memories of Mum using this tool and explaining it to me as I watched and listened, inspired and in awe. In art and in life, take the time to view things at a distance. This way, you can assess the larger visual structure. Light and shadow. Composition. Shapes. Contrast. Balance. And focal point. See the things that are hard to notice unless you challenge your perspective. I added this idea to my toolkit and always had this memory of you to remind me that while focusing on refining the details is essential, we must also acknowledge the value of stepping back and taking the time to look at things from another point of view. Our dear cousin Sharee gone too soon. Such a clever and diverse artist with so many interests. Holding my memories closer. Our deepest sympathies to Allan Robby and Jorgia hold onto your memories of this amazing lady.

I only knew Sheree for a short time but was so proud to have known her and called her my friend. Her kindness and compassion was self evident and her talent shone through. My thoughts are with everyone who knew and loved Sheree.

Sheree was like a second mother to me during my time in Australia. She opened her home and her garden to me, welcomed me into her family and circle of friends, and generously shared her love of art. It was a privilege to spend several months watching her create in her studio and devote herself so wholeheartedly to her passion. As we say in French, Sheree was a "gourmande de la vie". My first memories of Sheree take me back to high school art class. From the start her talent was obvious. But she wasn't just talented, she was delightfully cheeky. She was the one who kept us entertained with her constant quips at the teacher who pretended to be annoyed but quietly kept a tally on the blackboard. That blend of humour and effortless creativity defined so much of who she was. I was always in awe of her artistic ability which seemed to pour out of her so easily. And in return she loved to hear me sing. We truly fed each other's souls. We went on to share so much of our lives together. We walked through the fun times and the endless laughter of our youth, through shared houses, and through watching our families grow. We rode the waves of good times and hard times together. Sheree will be missed. She was an amazing printmaker and wonderful and kind person. I own one of Sheree’s prints, which I always adored, and now it becomes extra special for me.

Sheree was a warm, caring and loving friend across many years, now dearly missed. Now at peace, Sheree.

Sheree – a true Creative in all senses of the word. Our lives are richer for having known Sheree and having shared times of laughter and joy. A smart, sharp and clever woman who was always curious about the world and its people. Always generous with her time and caring for others. We will miss Sheree greatly.

You are very missed, my Cuzin. Both of us born in 1955 and 50 days apart made for much fun and lots of soul searching throughout our lives. Memories of family holiday times travelling between Young and Taree during our childhood are very fondly remembered. We would write crazy letters in between visits so we could stay in touch. We rekindled our friendship in 1972 when we both started our Nursing careers in Sydney. Our Mothers, Betty and Nancy were to also move to Sydney. Life took us in different directions as we matured and began our families in Townsville QLD and at Rollands Plains, NSW. Our first born children, daughters, were both born in 1984. Sheree would tell me stories about her art and print work: I was always fascinated with her skill and talent . I've loved sharing our lives as Cousins. Aunty Nan and I miss you very deeply. Love you ❤️.

Sheree was one of the strongest advocates for equality and feminism that I have ever known. She gave so much to the community and made a lasting difference in the lives of many. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.

Sheree - I will miss this bold, irreverent, feminist, feisty and fun woman who had things to say and inspired others to try. Her art, her analysis, her provocations created space for me to see the world a little differently, and I am grateful. Love to Sheree's precious family and dear friends xx

Such sad news in the loss of Sheree. Her brother Doug let me know of her passing. I was friends with her way before she moved to Qld. Please accept my sincere condolences to all her family both near and far. RIP

06/09/2026 A small gathering of friends and family was held at Sheree and Alan's home, a simple but touching tribute to a life well lived in surroundings that hold so many treasured memories. It was a celebration, and also an opportunity to discuss further memorial plans to be arranged in the coming weeks. Notice of dates and venues will be provided in the coming days.
